Summer vacations and a visit to the Grand Canyon go hand in hand. So if you’re planning a trip to the South Rim this summer here are some dos and don’ts:
Do: Take water everywhere you go. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. It’s the desert.
Don’t: Toss plastic water bottles over the edge.
Do: Ease up on food expectations. There isn’t a great variety regarding restaurants in the park or in surrounding areas. You’re going for the wonderment and the views anyway, right?
Do: Expect to pay $30 per car to enter the park. A slight increase in entrance fees have been expected for the summer.
Don’t: Try to hike to the bottom and back to the top in one day. Unless you’re really up for a challenge.
Do: Take your time. Hike or mule to the bottom, stay the night then hike or mule back up the next day. That’s the best way to do it we hear.
Do: Book your lodging well ahead. The closer it gets to the summer, the further out you’ll have to stay.
Do: Get there early. Parking lots fill up by the afternoon.
Do: Visit the Sky Walk. Spectacular views.
Bonus fact: About 5 million people visit the Grand Canyon each year.
